SAM O’BRIAN WAS shouldered into the elevator by Munroe, the natty FBI agent who was still fixed up in a vest and tie. The other agent, a hulking blonde who looked like a linebacker, stood behind him with indifferent eyes. A Springfield custom pistol in the big guy’s holster winked at O’Brian from beneath his suit jacket. It was proof he had nowhere to run.

Munroe and his lackey had picked O’Brian up at Anna’s, a cozy Irish pub seldom frequented by the shrill tourists who clogged Manhattan with their neon fanny packs and selfie sticks. It was where he’d arranged to meet Colin Dubchek at seven. Instead, the two FBI pukes had sidled up to him in his booth, and moments later, they were riding in their Crown Victoria toward the FBI Field Office. They hadn’t even bothered to tip O’Brian’s waitress.

Standing silent in the elevator, O’Brian began to weigh his chances of avoiding jail time and realized they were pretty slim. There was no way he would let Dubchek and Chu take the fall for this; his imperishable honor demanded that he take the brunt of whatever the FBI was about to dole out.

The elevator doors opened, and O’Brian was hustled forward. Looking around, he saw smart corporate offices with nice wooden doors and comfy upholstered chairs. If he was being taken to an interview room, then it was going to be the nicest interview room he’d even seen. At the end of the corridor was a heavy mahogany entryway and closed blinds. Munroe knocked on the door and entered without waiting for an answer.

And then Sam O’Brian, against all his expectations, found himself in the plush offices of Special Agent Lucille Hawtrey. Colin Dubchek, his confederate and co-conspirator, was seated by the bookshelf, gripping a cup of coffee as if it were a life preserver. He didn’t look up when Sam and the agents entered.

“I cannot believe,” Hawtrey snapped, “that I am standing before an officer of thirty-three years’ service, who has just attempted to illegally enter secure government property and steal confidential data.”

Hawtrey rolled her eyes and signaled for Munroe and the troll that followed him to leave. The dun clouds outside were being slowly illuminated by a bright half-moon.

“With such recklessness, I’m amazed you’ve managed to catch a single crook in your life.”

“It’s that recklessness, ma’am, that’s helped put some of the worst criminals in the city behind bars.” O’Brian stood stiffly on his feet and clasped his hands behind his back. He knew he was going down for what he’d done, but there was no way he’d let anyone question his ability as a cop.

“That attitude is going to get you into deep, deep trouble,” Hawtrey said, crossing her arms and turning away from O’Brian. She paused and let out a thin sigh that sounded very much like a hiss. “But not today.”

O’Brian glanced at Dubchek, but the kid wouldn’t lift his gaze from the coffee he was gripping. The poor guy must have taken a terrible fright when he’d been seized by Hawtrey’s agents.
